The problem

At first I had a problem where I only had two monologues within my video. Because of this the ratio of performance and narrative wasn't good. Through feedback I found that the audience were confused and thought that initially a girl had taken drugs and then got cancer. This is when I decided to put in the homeless scene and the transgender scene.

First Draft: Music Video

This is a first version of the music video created by me for the song This Woman's Work by Kate Bush. However, there are a few different things within this video that I believe can be changed to make the video more effective.

Planning: drug monologue and homeless monologue costumes

I have used two ideas from this music video for my own.

Within the drug scene my artist will be wearing a jumper and have her nails painted red which connotes to danger while the person handing her the drugs like the video is wearing a black glove.

The homeless scene will have close ups in order to convey emotion like in Ed sheerans video and my actor will be wearing a hoodie with the hood up and have a blanket to cover them.

Music Video Planning: Narrative

I have created a Flipagram and coverted it into a YouTube video in order to show the story boards I created in order to plan what type of shot I would use and how many seconds they would take up in my monologues.

Evidence of me filming my performance

I used this stool so that I could get a close up eye level with my artist.

Music Video Performance Planning: Location, Make up and clothing

I decided that for my performance I was going to use a blank wall drop for my location through out. Just like in the Jessie ware video where she only used one location. I opted for a blank back drop so that my artist was the main focus of every shot.

Here is evidence that for the performance side of my music video I had pre planned.
Location - infront of a blank wall
Hair - down and curly
Make up - normal night out natural looking
Clothes - long floaty black dress

Planning

I brainstormed what I personally thought of in regards to my target audience and my genre so that I could interpret these elements into my work.

I used the image chef app on my iPhone to create this.

Audience Profile

To create a profile for my audience I have decided to generate a simulation of the type of person that I would be targeting my video towards.

I have created the character of Emma Roberts and what her life would consist of through social media.

This shows that my audience is very cultured and loves things to do with culture for example art and architecture. They are also very liberal is terms of opinion therefore they will be open minded about the issues posed in the monologues within my music video.

I will try to target my audience within my music video through the conventions of the genre including the use of; narrative, location and fashion.

Letter of Permission

As the song I have chosen for the production of my music video is pre-existing I needed to ask permission in order to use it from the artist Kate Bush. I did this to ensure that there will be no copyright infringements with the song as they will be away that I have used it for education purposes.

My Song Choice: This Woman's Work by Kate Bush

Reasons why I have chosen this song:
  •  The song has the potential for a clear narrative path for a music video.
  • I like the song and am comfortable that I can interpret it well when creating my music video.
  • The genre of the song is out of my comfort zone therefore challenging me
  • The song is emotive and has the potential to follow the idea of creating monologues within it which I had planned to do after being inspired by P!NK-Dear Mr President
  • It was in the charts more than ten years ago. This means that we will not be tempted to copy any of the music video that already exists.
  • This song also has the right tempo to lip sync well together with a video.

Dear Mr President: Music Video Evaluation

I have chosen to base the concept of my music video around this video as I like how there is both performance and narrative involved equally within the production. The narrative allows me to be creative where as the performance allows me to use technical skills such as lip syncing. I also like the idea of the many different monologues highlighting key world issues within the video something which I will use. I have chosen to base the narrative of my video around current problems women face in society. The reason I have chosen this concept is because it is very emotive and many people will be able to connect to my music video. It also puts a current twist on an old song.

Planning what type of song to use

What elements enable you to recognise the genre?

The genre of this music video is electro pop. This genre is established through the setting in which the artist of the song is seen. The natural environment of sitting on a rock with birds and no shoes on gives a cultural arty feel to the genre. The clothing and make up choice of the artist is also genre specific as unlike pop videos the artist is very natural and in floaty clothes.

Why is it important from a distributor’s point-of-view that the video highlights the genre of the music?
It is important from a distributor’s point-of-view that the video highlights the genre of the music as it has to be seen clearly for an audience to be able to understand the context of the song and the reason why these creative choices have been used within the video.

How is the artist/band used in the video?
The artist Jessie Ware is used to create an emotive performance in order to keep her audiences attention due to using one location and just being positioned through the duration of the video on a rock she has emotion and movement in order to keep the audiences attention.

    How many locations are used?
There is only one location used within the video however the lighting changes at one point in order to give a day/night contrast.

What I can use in my final product:
    • Narrative set in one location
    • Artist in the same outfit throughout showing consistency
    • Clothing is stereotypical of the genre e.g. floaty and arty
    • The use of slow transitions e.g fading to build up an emotive atmosphere
    • Artist keeps the audience attracted to her performance through emotion shown through movement and expression
    • The use of zooming in and zooming out

    Choosing my genre

From the research I have done on music genres I finally decided that I wanted to do a pop video. However, I wanted to put a twist on this concept. Which is where I came to the idea of doing an eclectic pop video which simply means:
Therefore making it more challenging and more interesting for both myself and the audience when watching.

I created the cartoon above on bitstrip and app I downloaded on my iPhone.

    Planning Process - What Genre?

Now I have completed my preliminary task I began to think about my main task. I didn't have a clear idea on what I wanted to base my music video around therefore I decided to created a mind map, seen above in order to brainstorm all the various music genres I could use. This planning tool enabled me to visually outline all music genres before starting to construct my music video. I wanted to make sure I was making the correct choice when choosing my genre so that I wouldn't change half way through my project thus wasting valuable time.  I created this diagram using https://www.text2mindmap.com. This is an online mindmap creator and the finishing product looks much more clearer and professional than a hand drawn copy. It also expanded my technical media skills.
